One of our flagship projects, the school readiness initiative has been offering education support to 45 rural Gwanda schools. Education support included the construction and renovation of ECD classroom blocks, construction and renovation of indoor and outdoor play areas, teaching equipment and facilitation of a process of joint responsibility between the school and the community. To ensure that the gains of the School Readiness Initiative are consolidated, Uluntu established income generating projects in all schools which ranged from tuckshops, poultry pen fattening to goat projects. These Income generating projects have proven to be an asset base for school related as well as ECD related projects. For instance, in some schools the money derived from the projects was used to pay staff members who were tending to the school and projects during the lockdown era. In other schools the money was used to buy Personal Protective Equipment for the school while others used the profits to cater for ECD related needs through purchasing books and learning material for the neediest in their class.
